First element of the School Improvement Leadership Goal
In the House System, all Providence High School students, faculty and staff are divided into 8 houses with equal numbers from each class in each house; a Junior High house is also established. Selection is by random draw unless another family member is or was in a house. Each person will remain in that house throughout their time at Providence, and will continue even as an alumnus.
Student governance at PHS changed from the “student council/class officer format” to the House System in August 2009. Ten elected representatives serve in each of the eight houses – 3 seniors, 3 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 2 freshmen. One senior and one junior from each house meets in a school-wide House Council.
Each house has approximately 7 faculty and staff members, one acting as House Director. They assist students in planning a minimum of four activities annually, one each in the following categories: Service, Social, Spirit/Pride, and Spiritual.
House identity will be by title (a characteristic of a Pioneer), patron saint, and color. Patron Saints include four American Saints and four Doctors of the Catholic Church. Each house meets monthly for about 45 minutes during the school day with the exception of December and May. Subcommittees and houses may choose to meet on their own as needed.
In conjunction with the Advancement Office, existing alumni will be divided into, and become members of these 8 houses.
The House System is designed to encourage more leadership in the school as well as build relationship across classes by older students mentoring younger ones. Class identity is still encouraged, but new traditions are also created. Students will have the opportunity to attend a Leadership Retreat each summer.
In essence, the goal of the House System gives voice to more students by creating new opportunities for leadership within the houses and committees that work to organize and implement activities.
